Mesothelioma is often used as a descriptive element in the broad sense. There are, however four different types of mesothelioma. This terrible disease that is often misdiagnosed starts in the form of Pleural Malignant Mesothelioma . This form affects the outer lining of the lungs. The outer lining of the lungs is referred to as the pleura. The pleura protects the lungs from invading bodies and hostile cells.
Peritoneal mesothelioma affects the lining of the organs that are protected by the rib cage and are in the abdomen. This form of mesothelioma is experienced by 300-500 people a year in the United States. Percardial Mesothelioma invades and affects the mesothelium of the heart. The mesothelium is the sac the envelopes the heart. This particular form is exceedingly difficult to diagnose and treat.
Mesothelioma of the Tunica Vaginalis affects the mesothelium of the testicles. This form of mesotheioma is so rare that information on this type is no readily available. This type of cancer is usually detected when a lump or growth appears on the one of the testicles.
All of these forms of mesothelioma come in to play when an asbestos fiber lodges on the mesothelium of the organs described above.
