How Women Can Protect Themselves From Lung Cancer

It’s not a well-known fact, but more women die from lung cancer each year than any other form of cancer. Because of their smaller lungs, women are twice as likely to contract the disease as are men. Here are a few things that you can do, however, to lower your risk of developing lung cancer.

Eat pistachios. Pistachios contain a form of vitamin E that helps protect and speed healing of lung tissue. As a side benefit, pistachios contain an abundance of appetite-dampening essential fatty acids and minerals. Drink apple cider. As we all know, an apple a day keeps the doctor away. By eating one apple per day you can reduce damaging inflammation in your lung tissues. However, most of us will not eat one apple per day because it takes so long to eat that apple. As a substitute you can drink 8 ounces of apple cider daily instead. Apple cider is better than apple juice because apple skins are used when making apple cider, but not when making apple juice. The apple skins contain lung-protecting flavanoids.Take aspirin. Even if you smoke, a recent study at the University of Washington shows that taking four regular-strength aspirins weekly can reduce your risk of lung cancer by 41%. Aspirin works by slowing blood flow to abnormal cells, starving them of the nutrients that they need to survive. However, before beginning any aspirin therapy, be sure and check with your doctor as there are side effects to the regular ingestion of aspirin. Eat salsa. In addition to tasting good, salsa contains an antioxidant that quickly soaks into lung tissue and shields it from airborne pollutants. According to Yale researchers, this can lower your risk for lung cancer by 28%. Other cooked tomato products are also great sources for this antioxidant. Drink green tea. Green tea is loaded with compounds that have powerful anti-cancer properties. A study conducted in Asia found that by sipping at least one cup of green tea daily, you are five times less likely to develop lung cancer than people who don’t drink green tea.
